During his incredible career, Black Tie Affair won eleven graded stakes races, including the gr. I Breeders Cup Classic, gr. I Philip Iselin Handicap, gr. II Michigan Mile & One-Eighth Handicap, gr. II Washington Handicap, gr. II Hawthorne Golf Cup, gr. III cornhusker Handicap, gr. III Stephen Foster Handicap, gr. III Commonwealth Breeders Cup Stakes (twice), gr. III Equipoise Mile Handicap, and the gr. III Sheridan Stakes. His list of wins was impressive enough to the Eclipse committee to earn him Champion Handicap Male and Horse of the Year honors in 1991.
Following his retirement in 1992, Black Tie Affair entered stud duty in the United States at The Vinery. However, after a somewhat unsuccessful campaign, he was sold to Japanese interests and now stands at East Stud in Japan.
Even though he was not considered an extremely successful sire, Black Tie Affair was honored with several awards, including USA second crop champion sire, USA third crop champion sire and USA grand sire (ranked 7th). Some of his notable offspring include gr. I winner Formal Gold, who beat Skip Away in four of six meetings against him. Black Tie Affair is also the sire of gr. I winner Evening Attire and gr. III winners Washington Color and Inside Affair.
