Da Hoss won all three of his tw-year old starts, including the A.T.B.A Sales Stakes, his first stakes race. He ran in 1:07 1/5, which was a world record for a two-year-old. He was then given the winter off and raced much of his three-year old season on the dirt, running 2nd in four gr. II stakes races before winning the gr. III Best Turn Stakes on the dirt, and the gr. II Jersey Derby and gr. II Del Mar Invitational derby, both on the turf.
Da Hoss returned to racing at four to win the gr. III Fourstardave Stakes and the Pennsylvania Governors Cup. He was then forced to take time off due to lameness, but finally returned with a 3rd in the gr. III Kelso Handicap. Da Hoss was then sent to finish off his brilliant season at Woodbine in the Breeders Cup Mile. He won easily, pulling away by one and a half lengths.
Da Hoss was plagued by injury after injury, causing him to miss all of his five-year old season. However, at age six, things looked good. He won an allowance race and was then sent to Churchill Downs to defend his title in the Breeders Cup Mile. No one gave him a chance considering his long layoff (with only one prep). Da Hoss, however, was up to the challenge as he dug down deep in the stretch and battle back against tough competition to cross the wire first. Race announcer Tom Durkin exclaimed, This is the greatest comeback since Lazarus!
Da Hoss was a horse with a huge heart, lots of class, and a tremendous will to win. He was retired in 1998, and in 2001, he was put on public display at the Kentucky Horse Park.
