The birth announcement read, Its a boy! and journalists around the world took note. He shared national TV air time on the evening news nad has appeared in a wide variety of newspapers and magazines. However, the month-long watch by media was nothing compared to the 12 years of anxiety and frustration that confronted those closest to the mother, owners Bert and Diana Firestone. Their patience and persistence was rewarded on May 15, at 5:05 p.m. when Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Genuine Risk, at age 16, produced her first foal to live. The foal, aptly named Genuine Reward, received much fanfare on his arrival.
Genuine Reward would sadly spend much of his first days of life in the hospital, initially for Genuine Risks labor to be induced, then again for surgery to remove to colon impactions. Finally, at day 20, the two were returned to their stall at Three Chimneys Farm, and Genuine Reward steadily progressed.
Genuine Reward never actually made it to the track, as he was plagued with problems throughout his early training. However, he did make it as a sire, standing stallion to both thoroughbreds and performance horses. He is now standing at Eagle Point Farm in Virginia.
It was said by Mrs. Firestone that, of all those in his life, no one loved him more than his mother. Genuine Risk was a noble race mare with tremendous heart and an incredible ability to dig down deeper when the competition stiffened. However, watching her in the field with her son, she never showed that aggressive racing side. She was extremely caring of her son. Genuine Risk was a tremendous mother and is a living legend in many ways.
