Genuine Risk was bred by Sally Humphrey and sold as a yearling to Diana Firestone for $32,000. Genuine Risk demonstrated she was worth her purchase price in a season of unbeaten races at 2. Her most notable victories were in the Demoiselle and the Tempted Stakes.
At three, Genuine Risk became the first filly in 65 years to win the Kentucky Derby. In the Derby, she came from seventh place to take the lead after a mile and go on to win by a length. Genuine Risk narrowly missed winning the other Triple Crown races. She lost the Preakness to Codex with the jockeys inquiry, and lost the Belmont to champion Temperance Hill. In the fall of her three year old season, she won the Ruffian Handicap and was later named Champion Three Year Old Filly.
Her first year off the track, Genuine Risk was bred to Secretariat, but the resulting pregnancy ended in disappointment as the foal miscarried. Finally, after many barren years, Genuine Risk produced her first foal of 1993. The foal was appropriately named Genuine Reward. Genuine Risk has since been retired from broodmare duty to be pensioned at Newstead Farm in Virginia.
Genuine Risk was voted 91st best racehorse of the 20th Century and, in 1986, was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
