In 1986, Ladys Secret fashioned one of the greatest single seasons in horse racing history. She traveled from California to New York, dominating her division and four times taking on many of the nations best males. The diminutive filly won 10 of her 15 starts that season, all stakes races, and earned $1,871,053 to be named Horse of the Year and Champion Handicap Mare. She scored eight of her victories in gr. I races, and since 1973 when the TOBA began grading races, no horse has won as many gr. I stakes races in a single season. When she retired at 5, Ladys Secret had won 22 stakes races and 25 of her 45 starts. She has also earned $3,021,325, a new record for a distaffer at the time of her retirement.
Ladys Secret, sometimes better known as the Iron Lady, had her best season at 4 when she defeated the top males in the Whitney Stakes. However, the highlight of the season came in the Breeders Cup Distaff with regular rider Pat Day aboard. She led from the start through splits of 1:10 for six furlongs and 1:34.8 for the mile then completed the mile and a quarter in 2:01.2 while not even fully extended.
Following her retirement, Ladys Secret was voted 76th greatest racehorse of the 20th Century, and in 1992, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
