Even though only purchased for $37,000 as a yearling, Spectacular Bid was as close to the perfect racing machine as any of those before or after him. He could win on the lead or coming from 10 lengths back. He could run seven furlongs in 1:20, and he could run one and a quarter miles in 1:57.8, a time that has not been equaled on dirt in 19 years. It was his versatile speed that enabled him to break seven track records and equal another at five different distances from five and a half furlongs to one and a quarter miles.
A champion at the ages of two, three and four, he won at 15 different racetracks in 9 different states. He was sent off at odds of 1-20 an incredible 8 times and 1-10 six times. He made odds-on favorite in 22 of his last 23 races, even in the face of many top gr. I winners. His trainer proclaimed him, the greatest horse to ever look through a bridle. The Bid is a true legend.
With an incredible 2 year old season, Spectacular Bid was named Champion 2-Year Old Colt. At 3, he was unbeaten through the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but finished third in the Belmont Stales. He later won the Marlboro and the Meadowlands Cup. He was impressive enough to earn Champion 3-Year Old Male. In his final season, Spectacular Bid was unbeaten and set four track records, swept the Californias Strub series, won the Washington Park Handicap, and set a career earnings record. In his final race of the incredible season, Spectacular Bid earned a walkover in the prestigious gr. I Woodward Stakes and was proclaimed 1980 Champion Handicap Male and Horse of the Year.
Following his retirement, Spectacular Bid first stood stud at Spendthrift Farm before being moved to Claiborne Farm in Kentucky. In the early 90s, Bid was moved again, this time to Milfer Farm in New York where he is living his days as a king, just as the racing Gods intended.
Spectacular Bid was voted the 10th best racehorse of the 20th Century and in 1982, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
