America's best miler in the country upon his retirement to stud, Yankee Victor was never headed at any call in his last four starts, all at one mile. These included the Metropolitan Handicap (G1), the Westchester Handicap (G3) and Arlington's Hanshin Handicap (G3). Yankee Victor ran one mile at Aqueduct in 1:33 2/5 and earned triple digit Beyers in each of his last six starts!
Unfortunately for Yankee Victor, his career ended in disappointment. During his four year old season, news came out that Metropolitan Handicap winner Yankee Victor would stand at Mr. and Mrs. Brereton C. Jones's Airdrie Stud in Midway, Kentucky at the conclusion of the current season. His stud plans were announced on the same day that Arlington International stewards stripped the 4-year-old colt of one of his victories, the Grade 3 Hanshin Handicap, due to a positive test for the illegal medication methocarbomol. Purse money for the $100,000 Hanshin was ordered redistributed, and with the disqualification, Brite Valour became the official winner of the race.
Therefore, Yankee Victor's easy score in the June 25 Hanshin marked his last race. His owners - a partnership including Enrique Llorente, Moreton Binn, Taylor Made Farm, Omar Trevino, and others - announced his retirement soon after the Hanshin, citing that they found a small bone chip in the colt's right front ankle. Never the less, even despite the disappointing finish, Yankee Victor went out a champion and was sent to stud with high expectations of greatness.
Thus far in his career, Yankee Victor's first foals averaged an amazing $83,231 at the 2002 Keeneland November Sale (a 5.5 times return on stud fee). Therefore, Yankee Victor is not disappointing in the stallion shed.
