Bred and raced by the late Allen Paulson, Cigar was Horse of the Year in both 1995 and 1996, and Champion Older Horse in 1995 and 1996. From 1994 into the 1996 season, he compiled a winning streak of 16 races, typing the modern mark for major North American horses set by the great Citation from 1948-1950. Cigars winning streak included the gr. I Breeders Cup Classic in New York, the first Dubai World Cup, and major races in Florida, California, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Maryland.
Cigar, a Maryland-bred, hit the big time after being switched from grass. Overall, his record was 19 wins from 33 starts, with 17 of those wins coming from his final 20 starts. He earned a North American record $9,999,815, which made him the all-time leading money winner at the time of his retirement on November 9, 1996. During his incredible career, he compiled 12 gr. I wins, including the Dubai World Cup, Breeders Cup Classic, Woodward Stakes (twice), Jockey Club Gold Cup, Oaklawn Handicap, Pimlico Special, Donn Handicap (twice) Gulfstream Park Handicap, NYRA Mile, and Hollywood Gold Cup.
Following his racing career, Cigar entered stud at Ashford in 1997, but failed to get a mare in foal and currently is stabled and on public view at the Kentucky Horse Park outside Lexington.
Cigar has since been voted Racehorse of the Decade (1990s) and the 18th best Racehorse of the 20th Century. In 2002, Cigar received one of the highest honors possible when he was elected into the Hall of Fame in his first year eligible.
